Is it okay to mix contemporary furniture with traditional furniture?

I have a lamp table, sofa table, couch and 2 lazy boys in my living room, which are all traditional in style. The tables are a cherry color. I mounted a flat screen on the wall and want to put a media center under it. The one I'm looking at is a contemporary style and a darker color/almost black. Is it okay to do this or would it look funny?

Details:

  1. Personally, I wouldn't know the difference.
  2. It would look funny, but if you have 2 lazy boys in the room, I can't see how it would be that bad. Just do it because wooden media centers look bad and kind of old fashioned.
  3. would recommend u to use more of glass units for the media counter and white & cherry finish with straight lines. doing contemporary with traditional is a great art, only the right shapes, forms & Colors with the right elements will make it look great or else will ruin it. don't use black in contemporary with the existing furniture. being an interior designer wld prefer to view the pics of space and existing furnitre. mail me on tejashemanidesign@yahoo.com, wld like to help u.
  4. If it's a media center, I don't think it would be that much of a home decor faux pas to have a modern design. I mean, just having a flat screen TV in the room automatically clashes with the traditional furniture. That's like wondering if having a computer in the room will clash with traditional furniture. Well, unless the furniture was designed in the last 10 years or so, yes. But, you have no choice. you may want to look at the choices on that site.
